I decided it was time to create a ROTH IRA and start my investment there. I do plan on opening another ShareBuilder account once I determine my goal for saving each year. I suspect it will be over the $5,500 limit for IRA contributions, so I will need another account for taxable purposes.
My first step was to look through several of the MANY dividend Growth sites out there and look at their portfolios. This community is awesome and very open about what they hold so its easy info to get. I did some fancy work in excel and was able to count the number of occurrences of each stock in the different blogs.
These are the sites I used (7 in total):
http://www.dividendmantra.com/portfolio/
http://www.mydividendgrowth.com/myportfolio/
http://www.dividendgrowthinvestor.com
http://www.thedividendguyblog.com/my-dividend-growth-portfolio/
http://project3million.blogspot.com/
http://passiveincomemavericks.com/portfolio/
http://www.dividenddiplomats.com/portfolio/
What I found was that these stocks occurred in at least 6 of the above portfolios:
BP
CVX
JNJ
KO
PM
MCD
MO
PG
KMI
AFL
IBM
That told me that maybe these would be good options! I looked into each and decided it would be a good starting point for me. I am not going to be dumping in $100k to start, so I don't need to be too picky with my choices. Overall I like the variety here but I am investing solely on the aspect of dividend payout and performance. I don't particularly care or support many of these companies, but this isn't about investing in feel good companies.
I recently submitted my shareBuilder order to buy $500 of each of the following on Tuesday, June 2. I will update the portfolio page when that happens. My initial investment is $3500 minus shareBuilder Fees.
First Buys:
CVX, JNJ, IBM, MCD, PM, KMI, KO
